Finnegan

Apple Store, Stanley Cup Playoffs and Filming Finn

This weekend is starting off great.

The sun is shining on our fair city and I’m sitting outside as I wait for my appointment at the Genius bar (my MacBook Pro has a minor button issue) in the brand new Apple Store, the first in Western Canada.

Later, I’ll be filming Finnegan, my Duck Toller, for a movie I hope to put together later this weekend or next. I don’t really have a theme or plot in mind yet, but I’m sure one will emerge as the camcorder captures his antics.

Also, the much anticipated Stanley Cup Finals begin tonight with my favorite team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, vying for the Cup against the Detroit Red Wings, a venerable opponent.  I expect the series will be a good one, and while I am hoping the ‘Pens will win, I suspect it will be a tough go to get by the heavy experience and grit of the Wings.  Game on!

Boot Camp Cracked Me

It took less than two weeks but Boot Camp cracked me.  Specifically, it cracked my foot.  Even more specifically, it cracked the 5th metatarsal in my left foot.

A quick visit to the clinic and the doctor suggested the likely problem is a stress fracture , so he sent me off for x-rays.  Until next week at least, I am supposed to stay off my foot if I want to get back to normal walking.  A cane was suggested, which I purchased, but after a few days of that, I would much rather have crutches.  The cane has thrown off my alignment and I have more pain in my hip and knee than I ever did in my foot.

According to the doctor, that’s the end of Boot Camp, which is a hassle as I was training for the Vegas hockey tournament.  His opinion is that I should be good to go by the time the tournament begins, though.  I hope so.

Damn foot.

Lytophene

Main entry: ly·to·phene
Pronunciation: lee·toe´feen
Function: noun

: Hormone secreted by the body when encountering Finn while he is being cute (which is often). Creates a euphoric effect and a mitigation of stress on the person that interacts with Finn. When a person is under the influence of lytophene, they are likely to consider their current situation as better than before the release of lytophene.

A number of drug companies have tried to replicate the effects of lytophene, but without access to Little Finn, they have been unable to duplicate it.

The iMac has landed

After trotting the globe with stops in Shanghai, Anchorage, Memphis, Mississauga and Vancouver, the iMac has found it’s way home. FedEx even called me to say it was on it’s way and delivered it just minutes before the noon cutoff.

Sadly, I cannot play with it until I finish teaching my class tonight, so alone it sits in my house, still dressed in it’s international packaging.

Until then, it’s under the watchful eye of my vicious guard dog: Finnegan.

Coming soon: the unpacking.

Finnegan the Swimmer

For those of you lucky enough to have met Finnegan, you’ll know that he’s a precocious little pup who is friendly but sometimes wary of new surroundings and people. He’s a great companion and I have always looked forward to the day that he would be a swimmer (as his breed is meant to be).

However, due to his reticence to go in the water past his shoulders he has only ever watched as the other dogs chase a stick or ball in the water.

Until last week.

For some reason, he just decided to start swimming one day. I was at Ambleside Beach with him throwing sticks in the shallow end which he would retrieve. I threw one a little too far and without any coaxing, he just dipped in and swam right out to it. I was so jubilant, I waded in and congratulated him with a big praise. As I was wearing my work pants and shoes at the moment, I think he, and the people around me, might have thought I was a bit strange, but I was happy!

Since then, he has been a regular and enthusiastic swimmer, to the degree that he won’t leave the water’s edge unless he’s good and tired. It’s a great way to exercise him and he really seems to love it.
I even have evidence!
