Hockey in the Sun

Just hours from now, I'll be jetting off to Las Vegas to play in the Gambler's Cup, a hockey tournament put on by Canadian Hockey Enterprises.

My team is made up of regulars from our hockey group at work, along with a couple of outsiders to pad our ranks. But even with the hired guns, we can barely field 2 lines and our defensemen will have to double and triple shift. It'll be a tough set of games.

Having read about the tournament in a Globe and Mail article (PDF), we know we'll be in the company of teams who have experience, savvy and true grit.

We, however, are not one of those teams.

We are the team that Disney's Mighty Ducks would have beaten.

Easily.

Before Emilio Estevez came along.

There are no delusions amongst our rag-tag group of high-tech, day-job workers. In this contest, we won't be coming back with a trophy hoisted high... we'll be lucky to come back in one piece.

But there is one thing we're all certain of: there's few things more fun than playing hockey - in Vegas.

Wish me (us) luck.
